seahorse and evolution: create gpg keys and sign mails

Samedi, janvier 27th, 2007

I have been using gpg in CLI (see man gpg) to generate a gpg key and sign up the Ubuntu Code of Conduct quite some time ago.
Michel suggested I have a look at seahorse, a simple and straightforward GUI to manage gpg keys.
Seahorse

set up Ubuntu keyserver (http://keyserver.ubuntu.com:11371/) to publish your public key and retrieve your […]

A problem with libc6 (glibc) security update

Mercredi, janvier 24th, 2007

Please read jdong’s thread at ubuntuforums. Some packages have been locked for update in the repositories. Before that, the update would just fail, and it is important not to try any fix or workaround for now (see post #29 in this thread). New packages are on their way.

Wanna laugh ?

Dimanche, janvier 21st, 2007

Found on (and modified from, thanks Michel) ubuntu-fr forum, enter in a terminal :

zcat /usr/share/doc/linux-image-`uname -r`/changelog.Debian.gz | egrep “Release”
Enjoy ;)

Gajim 0.11 [en]

Dimanche, janvier 21st, 2007

I had an update yesterday from edgy backports, gajim is now 0.11.
So what’s new ? For the network setup, IPv6, Zeroconf and Network Manager are now supported (do not ask me what this is, I am currently trying to understand the Zeroconf specs), and some bugs have been corrected.
The eye candy stuff now :

each contact […]

The gender gap

Samedi, janvier 20th, 2007

Once again, Stemp (so when are you going to start blogging in English ? ;-)) reminded me of Joyce Park’s articles on venturebeat :
http://www.venturebeat.com/contributors/2007/01/02/the-hidden-engineering-gender-gap/
http://www.venturebeat.com/contributors/2007/01/04/a-modest-proposal/
This issue has also been discussed on LinuxChix mailing lists.
Two good papers discussing the lack of women in computer sciences and in Open Source area (I have already stated that, to me, […]

Epiphany and libxt-dev ? (and d-bus ???)

Jeudi, janvier 18th, 2007

Not sure about all of this.
Epiphany started to freeze this morning when I booted up my computer. Launching it from the command line got me with this error message :
:~ $ epiphany
(epiphany:5449): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Failed to create service browser: Bad state
(epiphany:5449): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Failed to create service browser: Bad state

Concerned about your disk(s) speed ?

Mercredi, janvier 17th, 2007

Thanks to rootprompt.org, I found a little package that allows to test actual disk sequential access speed. When disk capacities have largely improved, disk speed can be a very limiting rate factor, especially on laptops. hdparm comes with every Linux distribution :
~ $ sudo hdparm -t /dev/hda
Password:
/dev/hda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 92 MB […]

Solaris 10

Mardi, janvier 16th, 2007

Thanks to Stemp who reminded me with Sun offering free DVD of Solaris 10 ;)
Will I be able to get this baby running ? I had set up a partition to install etch, but the debian installer does not recognize my ATAPI cdrom (laptop) so I decided to install feisty. Guess I’ll wait a little […]

Ubuntu-Women roundup

Samedi, janvier 13th, 2007

First Ubuntu-Women meeting was held January 11-12th, 2007, on #ubuntu-women on irc.freenode.net. It was a quite exciting roundup and an opportunity to meet with other women using Ubuntu. You can read a summary on Ubuntu-Women Wiki and download the full log of the day. Also check ubuntuforms thread and UWN #28 (still in progress as […]

I found baobab on edgy ! [en]

Samedi, janvier 6th, 2007

Okay, this is entirely my fault, I had not checked or been looking for it. I liked baobab very much on dapper. baobab is a GNOME graphical tool performing real-time disk usage analysis, completing information given by df -h in CLI. I had tried to install it on edgy :
~ $ aptitude show […]

My little Tips and Tricks [en]

Jeudi, janvier 4th, 2007

I have been setting up a Tips and Tricks file for myself, little bits of everything I use (either for me or to help people) and never remember because I do not use them so often. This post will be sort of a sticky note where I can easily retrieve them when I am not […]

Unofficial Epiphany extensions [en]

Mardi, janvier 2nd, 2007

Thanks to ZeBob’s comment (in french, sorry ;-) ; Epiphany english entry is here), I’ve discovered new Epiphany extensions. So now, tab width is not fixed anymore, and when opening numerous tabs, they all stay before my eyes. I also could get rid of the close button on each tab and add one to my […]

New section for UWN translations [en]

Mardi, janvier 2nd, 2007

Jenda has added a new section on the main Ubuntu wiki page for the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter translations. So far, spanish and french translations are up and running. Thanks a lot Jenda :)

French translation for the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter [en]

Samedi, décembre 30th, 2006

This has been running for quite a while now. A small group of french-speaking Ubuntu translators got together and is offering a french issue for UWN. It is published on the french-speaking ubuntu-fr site : http://www.ubuntu-fr.org/lettre/ and is referred to as “Lettre Hebdomadaire Ubuntu”.
This project has now its own sub-forum : http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewforum.php?id=49 and I’ll […]
